Colposcopy

A colposcopy is performed for a close examination of the cervix and vagina to specifically look for signs of disease. Colposcopies are usually performed to help diagnose conditions such as cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, cervicitis, genital warts or pre-cancerous cells in the cervix or vagina. Using a microscope device, your doctor will take an extensive look at your cervix and possibly use some vinegar-water to make any abnormal areas be more noticeable. If questionable areas are noticed, a biopsy may be taken for further testing. This will feel like a pinch and may cause some mild cramping.

Colposcopies generally take 20 – 30 minutes. Light bleeding or colored discharged may be present following the procedure. Patients should refrain from sexual intercourse for at least one week.

Gardasil®

Gardasil® is a vaccination that helps prevent cervical cancer and genital warts caused from certain types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). High-risk HPV infections (when other factors are present such as a compromised immune system) cause cancer while low-risk HPV infections cause genital warts. Our office offers Gardasil®, and it is recommended that girls and women get the vaccine before their first sexual encounter.

While Gardasil® significantly decreases your chance of contracting cervical cancer and genital warts, it does not eliminate the risk. For more information on Gardasil®, visit the Gardasil® homepage.

Bone Density Testing

Bone density testing is used to detect osteoporosis. Using radiology, this imaging measures bone loss by sending energy beams through the bones. The soft tissue and the bones absorb the energy and then are measured. The results of your bone density test will show two scores:

  • A T score will tell you how dense your bones are compared to a young healthy adult of the same gender – when bone density is usually the strongest.
  • A Z score will tell you the density of your bones compared to the average density of someone your age and the same gender.

A normal T score is -1.0 or higher. A T score of -2.5 or lower indicate osteoporosis.

Urodynamic Testing

Urodynamic testing is a group of tests that measure bladder function and examines bladder storage and the flow of urine. Urodynamic testing may be recommended for patients with bladder problems, such as leaking, frequent urination, frequent urinary tract infections, sudden urges to urinate or pain while urinating. During the testing, the patient gives a urine specimen and then completely empties her bladder. A catheter is then inserted into the urethra to perform various tests such as leak point pressure and post void residual. Urodynamic Testing normally takes between 15 and 30 minutes and does not require sedating medication.

NovaSure

NovaSure is a treatment that gently removes the lining of the uterus and is performed to control heavy bleeding. Performed in the office, this is a one-time procedure to lighten or stop your period. During the procedure, a slender wand is inserted into the uterus which extends mesh into the uterus. A measured radio frequency is delivered through the mesh. The mesh is then pulled back into the wand and removed from the uterus. This minimally-invasive procedure (no incisions) is safe and quick. Patients report some cramping after the procedure, but little to no pain.
