Bone density tests play a vital role in diagnosing osteoporosis or assessing your risk of developing it. While there are several types of bone density tests, all are quick—typically completed in just 15 to 20 minutes—and completely painless. Results are provided in the form of two scores: the T-score and the Z-score.
The T-score compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult at peak bone strength, helping to identify any significant loss. The Z-score compares your bone density to others in your age group. A score above zero indicates higher bone density than average, a score of zero means your bone density is average, and a score below zero suggests lower-than-average bone density for your age.
